Darren Moore opens up on perceived shift in Sheffield Wednesday style of play in Bristol Rovers win

There was a very practical reasoning behind why Sheffield Wednesday seemed able to play in a far less direct manner in their win at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening.

The Owls won out 2-1 thanks in part to a diligent defensive display in the last 20 minutes after goals from Barry Bannan and Akin Famewo saw them pegged back by an Aaron Collins goal courtesy in part to some lax defending from Dominic Iorfa.

Wednesday were widely criticised for playing too direct and too ‘hoof ball’ in their defeat at Burton Albion on Saturday, but were noticeably more front foot particularly in the first half at the Memorial Stadium.

Asked why it was that Wednesday felt more able to ‘play through the pitch’ in Gloucestershire, Moore said: “The pitch is a lovely surface, it’s a really playable surface.

“It’s not a case of having a go at Burton but sometimes the surfaces play a part in that [the way teams set out to play].

“We have to play a part in the surfaces, we have to look at the personnel. I still think that at Burton we could have played more and we could have had a calmer approach when playing outside their box. What I do think is that we rushed things on Saturday and we didn’t show our quality. We over-hit passes and chose the wrong decision.

“That was because we had an urgency to get back into the game and you can understand it.

“Tonight we got the early goal, then we got the second goal. Then at half-time we knew they would come at us and we had spaces to exploit. What I didn’t envisage was conceding straight away and that made life that bit more difficult from there but once we settled down it was about being patient and picking the right time to go at their lesser defending numbers.

“At the end I think they had about seven attacking players on the pitch.”

Wednesday welcome another midtable side, Exeter City, to Hillsborough on Saturday hoping to put together a run of two wins on the bounce for the first time for over a month.
