Football is currently at a standstill due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, and with clubs struggling with the loss of matchday income, reports have stated that the EFL are looking to try and re-negotiate their contract with Sky Sports in an attempt to gain broadcasting rights for online platform, iFollow, while games are played behind-closed-doors.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the EFL’s chairman, Rick Parry, ‘wrote to all 71 clubs last week outlining plans for all Football League matches to be broadcast live online using their iFollow service when the sport returns’ saying that they see it ‘as a way of generating money while stadiums are closed to fans’.

It would be a tough sell for the league, though, who only agreed a £595m deal 18 months ago, and it remains to be seen whether – or for what price – Sky Sports would be willing to re-negotiate what was originally agreed upon in the controversial five-year contract in 2018.

As things stand, any weekend kick-offs and matches chosen for live broadcast by Sky are off limits for iFollow, but the EFL appear to be hoping that they will relax those rules given the current climate in the football industry.

Sky pay £119m-a-season for the rights to the Football League.
