CONFIRMED: Rhodes leaves Owls

The move sees Rhodes, who spent over eight years at Hillsborough, link up again with his former teammate and close pal Frankie Bunn. Ex-striker Bunn was named the League Two club’s new manager last week.

Rhodes, whose son Jordan plays for the Owls as a striker, played a key role in the development of young goalkeepers Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson. The 53-year-old has also persuaded the likes of Nicky Weaver, Stephen Bywater, Chris Kirkland and Keiren Westwood to join the club.

Bunn said: “I am delighted that Andy is here. We’ve both got history here, we’ll both work our socks off and we’re going to try and reignite this place.”

Rhodes has previously played and coached at Boundary Park. He played alongside Bunn in the late 1980s and was part of the Oldham team who reached the 1990 League Cup Final

“It’s fantastic, a dream come true,” said Rhodes. “I was here as a player in the great days with some really good people and I was fortunate to come back with Andy Ritchie and Iain Dowie as goalkeeping coach.

“The next progression in your life is to go the managerial side and fortunately Frank asked me to do that and I couldn’t wait to get here.”
