'Classic Wednesday' . . . 'Nothing makes sense anymore' . . . 'Excellent win. Excellent effort' - Sheffield Wednesday fans react as dismal run comes to an end after win over AFC Bournemouth

Barry Bannan’s second half penalty was enough to secure bottom club Sheffield Wednesday all three points against unbeaten AFC Bournemouth at Hillsborough tonight – bringing an end to their dismal run of four straight defeats in the Sky Bet Championship.

The win – the Owls’ first at S6 for eight months – eases the pressure on manager Garry Monk and moves his side onto minus one point at the foot of the table.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Steve Cook was given his marching orders for pulling down Josh Windass as he bore down on goal, giving away the penalty which led to Bannan netting the game’s winner, while Wednesday’s Kadeem Harris saw red deep into injury time for what appeared to violent conduct following a clash with Jefferson Lerma.

Here's what our Owls correspondent, Joe Crann, tweeted after the game: “Wednesday win at home. I repeat. Wednesday win at home.”

And this is how Wednesdayites, also on Twitter, reacted to tonight’s result.

@NewYorkOwls Credit to Bannan tonight. I’ve given him some stick the past few games, but his passing was much better today and we almost scored from a corner. Man of the Match for me. #swfc

@stebboswfc That’ll do nicely after an awful couple of weeks, get in #swfc

@Christoph0512 Classic Wednesday. Lose appallingly to Luton, Rotherham and Wycombe then beat previously unbeaten Bournemouth. #swfc

@DirtyLyle Excellent win. Excellent effort. Excellent 3pts. Excellent clean sheet. Too much to hope for a repeat on Saturday against Millwall and get out of negative points?! #swfc #wawaw

@absy909 #swfc beating a team that’s unbeaten after losing to a team that's never won in the league. Classic Wednesday

@ShaneEales1 For some strange reason I fancied us to win tonight. We tend to win the games we’re not expected to and struggle in the ones we are? Does it change my mind on Monk? No, sooner he goes the better, not the right man for this club. He never was? #swfc

@haddington Nothing makes sense anymore. #swfc

@studentbob Good all round performance that. Makes a change, mind. #swfc

@tsav1867 That's the best Börner has played in a very long time! #swfc

@DeLudoScribo Proper performance tonight, that, credit to Monk. But why on earth couldn’t we play like that in our last three games?! We play half as well as we did tonight and we win all three. Pelupessy had a great game to be fair to him, no one had a bad game #swfc

@RossClayton4587 Is it really that hard to motivate players to play like that every week #swfc
