The versatile 22-year-old was back in Jos Luhukay’s starting XI on Sunday as St Pauli went up against Erzgebirge Aue in the 2. Bundesliga, winning his place back after missing a few games in the German second tier.

And the young Owl, who was deployed at left back, repaid Luhukay’s faith in him by setting up St Pauli’s second goal – which would prove to be the winner – late in the first half.

Penney – who was also booked – had 32 touches in total prior to being replaced halfway through, having one shot, supplying one key pass, and making four crosses during his time on the field.

While Penney’s side won 2-1, another Wednesday loanee in Germany, Joost van Aken, remained sidelined for VfL Osnabruck’s 2-0 loss to VfL Bochum, with three points now separating the two teams in 13th and 14th place respectively – Van Aken’s side are just two points clear of the relegation zone now.

Things are looking up for Penney’s Wednesday career after it was confirmed that he had signed a new one-year deal at the club, however it remains to be seen what lies ahead for his Dutch counterpart once his loan in Germany comes to an end next month.

Both teams have three games left to play before the 2019/20 season comes to an end.
