Carlos Carvalhal explains transfer mistake former Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri made

Carlos Carvalhal led Sheffield Wednesday to the 2016 Championship play-off final

Carlos Carvalhal says he had a good relationship with Dejphon Chansiri but believes the former Sheffield Wednesday owner should have sold players when he had the opportunity.

The Portuguese was Chansiri’s first managerial appointment in June 2015 and he led them to a Championship play-off final in his first season and the semi-finals the year after. Carvalhal was sacked on Christmas Eve the following campaign when Wednesday were 15th in the Championship.

Despite the timing of his sacking, Carvalhal spoke positively about his own relationship with Chansiri during his two-and-a-half years in charge, a period where they enjoyed success and the fans’ feeling towards Chansiri was the complete opposite of what it was at the end of his tenure.

Carvalhal told The Star: “In that period I have good relation. And of course, it was him that chose me, so I can't say nothing against him, the opposite. I guess I have a normal relation in the beginning. I think with time he start trusting more in me. Conversations were normal. I have a good relation, so I can't say nothing about about him, absolutely.”

Wednesday’s push for promotion to the Premier League was built on some solid free transfers under former manager Stuart Gray such as Keiren Westwood, Tom Lees, Glenn Loovens and Sam Hutchinson. Carvalhal then added firepower and flair in the likes of Fernando Forestieri, who was the subject of big bids from Premier League clubs which were rejected. Although no one wanted star players to leave, it would have eased the club’s financial situation later down the line.

Carvalhal continued: “If you ask me about if I think that everything was in good direction, I will say that you don't do this because you want to do bad. You want to do the best, but the mentality that he bring - don't sell the players - because he said all the time, the players are like my sons and I don't never sell my sons. That made things, in my opinion, in business a little more difficult to him and to everybody.

“But he didn't do that because he is a bad person, or he wants to do bad to the club., it is because his mentality, that he truly believed that, this is my sense. But you know, football is different. You must be dynamic. You must sell one or two players in first season, in the second season, but it was in another direction.”

He added: “But I have a good relation with him, and I'm grateful to him to all my life because he gave me the opportunity to come to this massive club. “
