Canadian cruiserweight boxer Ryan Rozicki reveals reason why he has soft spot for Sheffield Wednesday

Watching Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley in 2023 left a lasting impression on boxer Ryan Rozicki

A Canadian professional boxer has revealed he has a soft spot for Sheffield Wednesday after attending the 2023 play-off final.

Ryan ‘The Bruiser’ Rozicki, 31, went to the game against Barnsley at Wembley with Three Lions Promotions managing director Dan Otter, who apparently has connections with the city, and The Owls’ support that day is something he has not forgotten.

“I’ve travelled to a lot of places and been around plenty of sporting events, Rozicki said in this interview. “But the passion of the Sheffield Wednesday supporters was something else. The noise, the pride, and the way they backed their club all day was incredible. It reminded me a lot of what boxing fans are like when they get behind one of their own.”

While Otter added: “Ryan absolutely loved the experience at Wembley. “The Wednesday supporters welcomed us and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Ever since then he’s followed the club and always asks how they’re getting on. It’s a real connection, not something manufactured for a headline.”

Cruiserweight Rozicki is fighting Chris ‘The Gentleman’ Billam-Smith in Bournemouth this Saturday. Rozicki has an impressive 21-1-1 record, including 20 knockouts, and is currently ranked No.1 by the WBC. Victory could move him closer to a shot at a world title.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for England since that trip,” he added. “If a few Wednesday fans are cheering for me on Saturday night, I’ll happily take it.”

Promoted by Zuffa Boxing, the fight can be viewed on Sky Sports and Paramount+, with the broadcast starting at 6pm.
