The Owls currently have only 15 senior players on their books following the drop down from the Championship, with Darren Moore in the process of rebuilding the side for the 2021/22 campaign, but it appears that the bookies have faith in their ability to bounce straight back.

It will be Wednesday’s first venture into the third tier since they managed to gain promotion from League One back in 2012, although on that occasion it was by virtue of finishing as the division’s runners-up.

This time, Moore will no doubt have ambitions of going one better as they eye an immediate return to the Championship, and it looks as though they’re already being touted as potential title challengers alongside the likes of Sunderland, Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town.

It’s worth pointing out, of course, that the odds don’t include Lincoln City and Blackpool as they prepare to face off in this year’s League One Play-Off final, and while either Morecombe or Newport County will also join the division from League Two – though neither are expected push for promotion.

Sunderland – 7/1

Charlton Athletic – 9/1

Ipswich Town – 10/1

Portsmouth – 12/1

Rotherham United – 12/1

Bolton Wanderers – 14/1

Oxford United – 14/1

Odds will no doubt change once the results of the Play-Offs are confirmed, but the Owls are tipped to be there or thereabouts after becoming yet another big name to have fallen upon hard times and dropped into the third tier.
