'Blatant' - Wycombe Wanderers fume at refereeing decision against Sheffield Wednesday as boss is sent off
The view from the opposition camp...
Wycombe Wanderers felt two big decisions went against them in their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
The Owls won 2-1 at Adams Park on Tuesday night, climbing to second in the League One table after successive victories. The hosts went ahead after six minutes through Cauley Woodrow but Louie Barry levelled five minutes later.
Wednesday were then awarded a penalty in first-half added-time when Woodrow was deemed to have fouled Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe made no mistake from the spot.
The Chairboys, who had a goal ruled out for handball in the second-half, also felt they should have had a spot-kick for handball. Frustrated Wycombe manager Michael Duff was sent off after the full-time whistle, meaning first-team coach Alex Morris was on media duties.
“Really disappointed to lose the game,” Morris said. “I don't think we deserved to lose the game. There were decisions within the game, and I'm loath to make reference to them, but they were deciding factors in the game. We should have had a penalty with the blatant handball in the second half. And the penalty that was given to Sheffield Wednesday just wasn't a penalty. It's as simple as that. And those are game-defining moments that have ultimately led to the scoreline that we've got.”
In another interview with the Bucks Free Press, Morris continued: “He (Callum Slattery) is on his way down before he even gets close to Cauley. He doesn't make any contact with him. We have a definite penalty when Caolan (Boyd-Munce) shoots. I think it was (Gabriel) Otegbayo who saved it with his hands. He literally dived and saved the ball and produced an action that a goalkeeper would produce. How that's not been picked up and seen, I don't know."
Wycombe went into the game on the back of a 5-1 hammering Stockport so they were looking for a reaction and they believe they got one apart from the result.
Morris added: “We started the game with some real impetus. We could tell that it was going to be a high-paced, fast, and frenetic game right from the start. We matched them in all areas of the pitch. The real disappointment was that we couldn't preserve that lead for long enough. Because I think if we did, the outcome at the game probably would have been different, as we'd have grown in confidence and belief, and that's something that we desperately needed off the back of Saturday's result.”
