“Highlights on the day include my dad getting hit on the head by a giant Sylvester stuffed toy but more importantly the ovation we gave to suspended Carlton Palmer before the game, the ‘dink’, the goal and the feeling watching Nigel Pearson lift the trophy surrounded by my family.

“What a great day that was.”

Dave Dowling said: “I remember the dink & also the sight of Pearson lifting the trophy. The trophy itself looked so tiny as we were stood at the other side of the ground.

“It was a great time to be an Owl, but I just wish I was older so I could have appreciated it more.”

Katie Dunstable remembers: “What a brilliant day that I will always remember. Beers in Leicester Square before making the trip up Wembley Way with what felt like a million Wednesday fans.

“It was just the start of an amazing few years where all our dreams – almost – came true. Sheffield Wednesday do days out at Wembley better than any other club. Fact. But for a while there we did have lots of practice.”

Paul Webster said: “Simple. The best day I’ve ever had being a Wednesdayite. From the scenes on the M1, Wembley Way was a mass of blue and white, the singing in the ground and atmosphere. The ‘dink’, the celebrations, the lifting of the cup from Nigel. Never to be forgotten.”

@thebristoldoris said: “The flags, the mass of cuddly toys being thrown around, the walk up Wembley way, Roland Nilsson keeping Lee Sharpe in his pocket and the crappiest old bus to get down there in...”

John Dyson recalls: “We went down in a bus with the Penistone Owls. I was 16 and remember the goal and Lawrie Madden’s run up the wing at the end. Man United fans were friendly after the game, wishing us luck and saying they’d see us next year.

“Then we got home to find that my Mum and Dad had decorated the front of the house with a massive flag (I think a blanket really!) and labelled it Big Ron's Barmy Army - or similar! Stayed up for weeks did that.”

Simon Heeley said: “There were 52 of us on a bus from Worksop, we had a Wednesday quiz on the way down.

“I remember us all sat together on a grass verge nearly Wembley with god knows how many packs of booze, we had a fantastic day, just the best day ever watching the Owls.”
