The 30-year-old midfielder, who was handed the captain’s armband by Garry Monk at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, will see his current contract at Hillsborough expire at the end of the current season, with Brentford said to be one of the teams who have shown an interest in him.

Reports emerged as the transfer window came to a close that the Bees had made an offer for the Scottish midfield man in an attempt to lure him down South, however they were reportedly swatted away as the Owls looked to keep hold of their number 10.

When asked about the interest, and his future at Hillsborough, Bannan insisted that he wants to get things sorted ‘as soon as possible’.

He told the media, “I’m happy where I am, I love this club… But obviously my contract is running down as well, and I have a family and people to think about as well as me.

“When you see these things it can take your mind off things, but I spoke with my family and my agents, and my focus was on the fact that I’m the captain of this club and I don’t want to be getting relegated as captain. I want to make sure we push this season, stay up, and even go on to greater heights.

“I never lost focus. As soon as I spoke to the gaffer way back in the summer about getting the captaincy, I’m here to do a job and it’s still the same way now.”

And would his decision to sign a new deal be reliant on Wednesday staying up in the Championship?

“Not at all…” he explained. “I’ve been in contact with the club over that, and I’m leaving it to my agent to get it sorted. As far as I’m concerned, I’m happy where I am and the club’s been great to me - so let’s hope something can get done.”
