Sheffield Wednesday should score more goals than they do if the statistics are anything to go by, but how do they compare to the other teams across the Championship?

Wednesday are seventh in the league in terms of average shots per game (13.1) and sixth with regards to shots on target per game (4.3), however sit 15th in the scoring charts with 46 goals in 37 games.

To put that into context, second-placed West Bromwich Albion (14.5) average just 1.4 more shots per game than Wednesday but have scored 18 more goals (64), and Leeds United have had 604 shots (SWFC have had 485) scoring 56.

Wednesday aren’t short on the key passes front with only seven teams in the league making more (355), though they have been heavily reliant on Barry Bannan (79) and Kadeem Harris (43) contributing 122 of them.

In terms of types of goals, SWFC’s biggest threat is from wide areas, with only Bristol City (19) having scored more goals from crosses than the Owls (14) - Monk’s side are one of just six teams not to have a single through-ball assist in 2019/20 to date.

A promising stat for Monk is that Wednesday are among the top six teams in the league in terms of shots inside the six-yard box (45) and penalty area (274), suggesting that they’re getting in good positions, even if their shot/goal conversion rate is less than 10%.

The Owls are distinctly average in the dribbling department with 8.6 per game (14th-ranked in the league), and are also 14th in terms of the amount of successful dribbles (319) - Harris and Jacob Murphy can take credit for 117 of them.

In terms of numbers, Sheffield Wednesday duo Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher have been among the Championship's top performers this season. In terms of numbers, Sheffield Wednesday duo Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher have been among the Championship's top performers this season.

Another interesting stat is that only Birmingham City (356) have been given less fouls than Monk’s side (363), but the Owls have had more fouls given against them (570) than any other club.

With English Football League chairman, Rick Parry, saying that leagues need to be completed by the end of July, there is hope that football could return in the not-so-distant future, though only if it is deemed safe to do so.
