The forward had three separate loan spells with the Owls – two in 2013 and then again last year – with varying success, but is most fondly remembered for an excellent period between November 2013 and January 2014 where he scored eight goals and got three assists in 11 games.

Wickham has had a difficult few seasons since having a decent start to life at Palace in 2015, and didn’t manage a single Premier League appearance in 2020/21 after returning from a loan spell at Hillsborough in 2019/20 that saw him score two goals in 13 appearances.

Now, as confirmed on the Premier League’s official website, the 28-year-old is one of several players on the hunt for a new club as a free agent, with another loanee, Izzy Brown, also on the list following his release from Chelsea.

According to reports, Wickham has become a target for Wayne Rooney’s Derby County as the former Manchester United man looks to rebuild his side following their dramatic last-day survival against Darren Moore’s Owls – while Birmingham City and Bristol City have also been linked with the ex-Sunderland striker.

Wickham played a total of 30 games for Wednesday during his various periods at Hillsborough, scoring a total of 11 goals, and he’ll now be hoping to try and get his career back on track next season at whichever club he eventually ends up at.
