Andre Green turned down other offers to join Sheffield Wednesday – and he’s looking forward to playing with former Aston Villa man Barry Bannan

The 22-year-old was announced as the club’s first January signing of the season last week, penning an 18-month contract as he looks to get back on track following his exit from Aston Villa last year.

Blessed with power and pace, it’s no surprise that the Villa academy graduate had generated plenty of interest, with the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Brentford having reportedly been interested in the past.

It’s Wednesday who have won the race for his signature though, and he admitted that of all the offers, Hillsborough was the best one for him.

He told the media this week, "We did have a few offers from elsewhere, but Sheffield Wednesday was in the pipeline from back in the summer and I always knew about it from before the season started.

"We had other offers, but I just thought that this would be the best place for me to come."

And he’ll be hoping to make an immediate impact this weekend if let loose against Everton in the FA Cup, with the young winger – who has also played up front – saying that he already feels at home after meeting the bulk of his teammates over the weekend.

Wednesday’s Middlewood Road training ground has reopened after the COVID-19 outbreak that saw two of their Championship games postponed, and he’s admitted that he’s been welcomed with open arms.

He told The Star, “All of the boys have been really good. Barry Bannan was obviously at Villa, so we have a lot in common that we’ve been talking about… He’s experienced, and we’ve been talking about stuff on the pitch. I can already feel a relationship that, if I do play up front, he’ll be slotting the balls in and I’ll be running behind – I feel at home.”

Green has been registered and could make the trip to Goodison Park this weekend as he looks to run out in his number 16 shirt for the first time.
