The 23-year-old becomes Wednesday’s second signing of the transfer window, following in the footsteps of Argentine youngster Manuel Hidalgo from Italian third tier outfit Triestina.

Da Cruz, a former Holland youth international, can play across the front three and is best known for his dribbling, passing and direct style of play.

Speaking after completing his move to Hillsborough, he said: “It has always been my dream to play in England and with this opportunity I am really happy.

“I am attracted by the fan base of Sheffield Wednesday, a big club in a big league and it will be a big test to see how far I have come as a player.”

Here’s how some Wednesday fans have reacted to today’s signing on Twitter.

@maxineswfc12 Hopefully a much needed improvement.

@keiron1972 Did you hear that Monk, "I'm ready to play." Get him in that team on Saturday, no bloody excuses!

@Justom29 Not getting carried away but definitely new Overmars #swfc

@SwfcJonesy Not gonna pretend I know who he is. But we do need something up top and in the middle. But red cards, fighting with fans and team mates. I like him already. #swfc #NextDiCanio

@MikeNorton1980 People making a right fuss about Da Cruz's sending offs. He's never been sent off before 65th minute. We just need to sub him after an hour every game. #swfc

@YOLO8976 Know nowt about him, has a point to prove and sounds like he has passion and is a fighter, so start him Saturday. #swfc

@Jaybe07 To be fair I like a player with a bit of attitude. Just tell him and Forestieri to go and cause chaos. #SWFC

@MrPaulPashley Seems like a cheap option. Not to be negative and hope he’s a flyer!! But underwhelmed like many. To be hoped he’s better than the other Dutch players we have!

@Kirk_SWFC Not sure what I expected but I’m underwhelmed by this signing, looks very similar to a few signings we’ve made over the last five years or so.
