Alan Biggs: Long-term vision needed at Sheffield Wednesday for latets boss Darren Moore

Writing before the midweek game, following his three opening defeats, hopefully this is an unnecessary precaution.

Not that Moore should need protecting or there be any doubt over his position at a ridiculously early stage.

But when you are the fourth incumbent of one season and your club’s fans are in a ferment of discontent your longer-term future cannot be regarded as anything but questionable.

So, before the former West Brom and Doncaster boss gets drawn into one of those increasingly pointless debates, let’s remember some important details.

1/ Moore’s appointment was widely applauded.

2/ Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri did not face criticism for this decision.

3/ Moore would have been very warmly welcomed given a customary introduction to the Hillsborough crowd.

4/ The new man made a bold decision on his career. He was brave to swap a safe position and a possible promotion for a more than probable relegation, albeit better paid at a bigger club.

5/ If Wednesday go down, Moore could not be blamed for it. By anyone.

In summary of all the above, if a bandwagon starts to roll questioning Moore’s appointment, what we are saying is we got it wrong. The vast majority of us, anyway.

Not Chansiri, for all that has gone before. Not Moore for taking the plunge. But everyone who applauded.

What I believe the club can least afford right now is another “change the manager” agenda. And I believe that even stretches to an increasingly likely relegation.

I would imagine Chansiri intends to keep his man at the helm in that event and, while criticism of his running of the club is fully justified, it won’t help if public opinion blows him off that course.

One of the factors that made sense in the appointment is that Moore had managed successfully in League One.

It’s also relevant that no-one can legitimately point to any of the last five “permanent” managers as being singly responsible for the Owls’ decline.

The problem has to run deeper and it’s to be hoped Moore has the support network and framework to succeed. You can have Pep Guardiola and it still won’t work unless conditions are right.

It’s time to look beyond the immediate and rebuild, which may require more time and patience than ever before - and a willingness to change things other than the manager.
