Alan Biggs: Garry Monk has already achieved something hugely important at Sheffield Wednesday this summer

As much as fans are excited by new signings - and some good ones are being made - it’s not really logic that says Sheffield Wednesday are about to turn their fortunes.

It’s something else entirely. Chemistry? A new start?

Because if you wanted to be harsh about it, you could say the Owls will be relying, in the main, on the nucleus of a squad that flopped last season.

Individuals within it failed, to a greater or lesser degree, to consistently deliver their best.

Exceptions were few. Dominic Iorfa, Liam Palmer and perhaps Kadeem Harris. Even Barry Bannan didn’t always perform to his level. Others flickered.

A lot will have to change. Can a raft of newcomers, needing time to settle, make all the difference? Remember, the Owls need close to play-off form just to stay up if the 12 point penalty sticks on appeal.

What’s new? Answer, everything in terms of environment and atmosphere; nearly everything in respect of the management team; most things if manager Garry Monk has his way in instilling a new culture around the place.

If the mood changes then the personnel can go with it. Certain players will know better than us that they are capable of higher than their recent levels.

Have the Owls finally created the conditions to produce it? Is there now a freshness where things had gone stale?

Against a fair amount of opposing logic, I’m confident of the answers. It’s a feeling, a good one.

And the signings look good, seeming significantly also to bear the fingerprints of the manager rather than any other agency. Monk apparently given his head.

He’s fought his battles on high-profile players he wanted out. Now he’s being backed on those he wants to bring in.

People will have varying opinions on the wisdom in some cases but there is no denying that a shake-up has been long overdue or that the manager needed to play the lead role.

So far, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley and Izzy Brown are in the building, with probably at least as many to follow. A real sense of purpose in the air.
