Owls CEO David Bruce laughed when he said Sheffield Wednesday need to sign ‘quite a few’ players this summer.
And he is not wrong. There is a massive rebuilding job ahead of the League One season starting in August.
Bruce says they will be aggressive, smart and act quickly as they aim to put together a competitive squad. He said that targets are ‘emerging’ and that they need to take opportunities and start to ‘execute’ their plans.
The transfer window does not officially open until June 15 but clubs will announce agreements with players before then.
The free agent market will be significant for many clubs, including Wednesday, so we have looked at 14 players released by Championship clubs who might be the pick of the bunch.

9. Myles Peart-Harris
The attacking midfielder has been mentioned with Wednesday before. At 23, he is one of the younger players available after leaving Oxford United, who will be in L1 with The Owls next season, which perhaps suggests he has Championship interest on him. | Getty Images

10. Danny Ings
His one season at city rivals Sheffield United would not bother people if he did the business. Capped by England and has played for some top clubs like Liverpool, Aston Villa and West Ham. Aged 33 but he could still find the net in L1, you'd think. Wages could be a stumbling block, though. | Getty Images

The 31-year-old attacking midfielder actually had a short loan spell at Wednesday 11 years ago. After moving around, he eventually found a home at Stoke City in 2022, making more than 120 appearances, but only 14 starts last term. | Getty Images

12. Jed Wallace
The winger would bring lots of know-how, with 500 appearances under his belt, with most of those in the Championship. Aged 32, he will feel he still has something to offer after leaving West Brom. | Getty Images
