The Australian international looks set to miss the next two games at the very least with a knee injury and though there are a number of midfield options within the Sheffield Wednesday squad, there is concern over whether there is anyone able to cover his ‘midfield general’ role effectively enough.
With the transfer window shut but clubs still able to shop in the free agents market, we took a look at 11 options available to the Owls should they feel the need to dip in for reinforcements.

A one-time EFL wonderkid, it's incredible to think that John Bostock is still only 28 years old. He spent a short-term loan stint at Wednesday back in 2012 and since 2013 has been playing across Europe until a loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season. Left Toulouse in October after relegation from Ligue 1 and is looking for a club. Photo: Marc Atkins
Garry Monk told The Star last week that Wednesday had been in contact with out-of-contract Irvine earlier this year but that it hadn't come to much. Irvine remains out of contract after leaving Hull in the summer and at 27 would bring international experience as one of Luongo's Australia colleagues. Not a traditional holding midfielder but would provide a bit of bite. Photo: Lewis Storey
A club icon at Reading where he made over 150 appearances, Williams would fulfil the brief for a holding midfield player and would bring with him a wealth of Championship experience, having also played at Huddersfield. Now 31, the USA international was last seen playing as a holding midfielder for Cypriot side Pafos FC.. Sam Hutchinson's predecessor, then. Photo: Shaun Botterill
Another international with Championship experience, Isreali midfield man Beram Kayal made well over 100 appearances for Brighton in their transition from Championship side to Premier League mainstays and enjoyed a loan spell at Charlton last year. He's 32 now but is known as a fit, aggressive competitor, very much in the Luongo mould. Photo: Marc Atkins
