It was on the cards for some weeks and months, but Sheffield United’s relegation back to the Championship was officially confirmed yesterday.

A 1-0 defeat at Wolves meant that United’s two-season stay in the Premier League came to an end.

And although their fans did not shy away from a disastrous season, many took the opportunity to reflect on a magnificent journey from the bottom of League One.

Here’s a selection of fans’ tweets after relegation was confirmed.

@Firthy_6: Glad that’s confirmed and done with. Worst season ever. Now I just can’t wait to get back in lane and go again. Love dem blades

@redwhiteutd: So Norwich kept hold of their single best player and striker but lost a big hitter in Godfrey. Is Berge our big sale to help keep 80% of the group together? Or is it Egan. I expect it will be both!

@HillBlade1992: Unreal journey we’ve been on the last 5 seasons. Blade through and through and will be back in August. Love them blades, always have and always will

@lynsey15taylor: Knew it was coming but its now official, back to the Championship next season but what a journey past 5 seasons, plenty of highs (too many to mention in one post) and only few lows and one thing I won't miss.... VAR

@gill_carly: It was inevitable from this time last season as we didn’t improve the team or recruit well enough to stay in the PL. It still hurts. The 4th time I’ve seen us relegated but I will never forget this journey!

@DavidMckenzie89: Relegation been all but confirmed for many months now. Bring on the Championship, new season, new manager, fans back in the ground and a fresh start

@theashnicholson: Sometimes we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. This was the time. The meteoric rise cannot be underestimated, we overachieved in some respects yes, and it was a terrible season. But I will continue to support this great club

@SBatts79: Take my hand, take my whole life too, for I can't help falling in love with you... UNITED, UNITED, UNITED. Thought thick and thin

@blade_devon: Everyone's saying we'll smash the Championship. I hope we do. But dont hold your breath

@Blea147: Getting relegated in October is definitely less painful than how we usually do it. Thanks to Chris and the players for making it easy on us

@TJ1889: We need a strategy going forward to inject some positivity and excitement into the club. Make our managerial appointment ASAP, release season ticket news and reaffirm commitments to be competitive in the transfer market.

@mattybudge04: Once a blade always a blade , love my club no matter what league

@AliceInSheff: If you were here for the glory then this team’s not for you. It’s been an incredible 5 years and the journey of a lifetime but time to close that chapter and focus on a new one in the championship. Once a blade.
