But who is Cash, what can he offer and more importantly, where would he likely fit in Chris Wilder's squad, if he were to sign for the Blades?

The son of former Chesterfield man Stuart, Cash began life as a midfielder but was recently converted to a right-back by Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi. He has previously been linked with big-money moves to Chelsea and RB Leipzig in his career.

United's targeting of Cash makes sense, for the same reason as last season's swoop for his former Forest teammate Ben Osborn. Osborn acted as Enda Stevens' cover and competition at left wing-back throughout the campaign, but also impressed when he got his chance in midfield. Cash would obviously compete for right wing-back with George Baldock, but also be able to operate in right central midfield. John Lundstram ended the season there but, with his contract expiring in less than 12 months, his future at Bramall Lane is uncertain.

Forest's bargaining position is strengthened by the fact Cash is under contract until 2023, and they are holding out for a big fee for one of their star assets. Cash's defensive and attacking stats aren't too dissimilar to Baldock's, when playing in a similar position - albeit in a division below - while he also averages more shots than Lundstram when playing in midfield. His expected goals metric is also twice as high as Lundstram's and his average number of touches in the opposition's penalty box is also a lot higher - suggesting Cash is no stranger to getting into scoring positions.

Again, it's important to note the difference in levels between the Championship and Premier League, but Cash's signing would certainly fit the Wilder profile - one of the Championship's most impressive performers, young and hungry and with a point to prove. Cash joined Forest from the FAB Academy, based at Bisham Abbey, after being released by Wycombe Wanderers at 14. He worked in a department store before joining Forest - and may soon be a Premier League footballer.
