PH on why United have fallen short
It’s those moments. The little bits of quality and then at the other end, being too open and not being able to shut that chance out. They’re the moments United have been strong in before. It’s not luck after 32 games and if you’re going to pick a game to typify the season, that would be it. There’s been a lot where they’ve been on top, missed the big chance and then conceded. That’s where we’ve fallen short again.
You only have to look at the physical data this season, Leeds have been out on their own but we’re not far behind them. The lads are giving everything. We gave Wolves their best two chances and we got in too many positions to not produce more efforts on goal. We were on top, everyone could see that, and created our first clear-cut moment. Twenty seconds, the ball is in the back of our net and that’s the moment that probably typified the season.
Paul Heckingbottom’s post-match reaction
It’s about results. No-one can fault their efforts and I think we should have had something out of the game. It typifies our season to be honest, the way that game’s gone.
We faced a side that I have huge respect and admiration for, for their group of players and Chris and Paul and the club. It was a game of two halves, we should have killed the game in our counter attacks because we had too many not to.
Nuno’s reaction after the game
It’s not about the table, it’s about how we finish and how we build what we want to keep on building for next season. We have another tough game next season and we have to improve, the players have to engage until the end and the players not in the team have to work harder to get in. It’s about building and improving.
And that’s a wrap
for Sheffield United as they are relegated from the Premier League with a 1-0 defeat at Wolves - they were decent tonight, more than decent in spells, but it wasn’t enough as familar failings cost them dear in a game they had to get something out of to stay in the Premier League, for the time being at least.
Stay with us for reaction from Paul Heckingbottom as United face up to life in the Championship after two seasons in the top flight.
sees Bogle come on for Ampadu - five minutes left of normal time for United to get back into the game
Big save from Ramsdale
to deny Saiss after the ball fell into his path in the area, he spread himself well and blocked it before United raced up the other end with Baldock, who overhit his pass to Oli Burke and the chance goes begging
Chance for United
as Norwood forces a save from Patricio after Mousset’s pass picks him out, the Frenchman was offside anyway so it wouldn’t have stood but it was another nice bit of build-up play from the Blades
Shouts for a penalty
as Stevens goes down under the challenge in the box, nothing is given before Burke goes on the outside and crosses, but Patricio cuts it out and Norwood fouls Traore to relieve a bit of pressure
sees Osborn and Brewster replaced by Burke and Mousset as United chase an equaliser
Stevens goes close
with a superb effort after fashioning it with a nice touch before shooting on his weaker right foot, he smashes it and Patricio is forced to tip it over - what a goal that would have been to get United back into it
as Osborn runs in behind and his cross is blocked behind, but the corner comes to nothing
and it’s the story of United’s season as Enda Stevens misses a huge chance at one end and seconds later the ball is in United’s net - Willian Jose gets it from Traore’s cross from the right and Stevens hitting his shot straight down the middle and against a defender looks a big, big moment in this game
United have started the second half
nicely and on the front foot, Wolves have just enjoyed a rare attack but Podence’s cross comes to nothing
