Why there's no shortage of faith in young Sheffield United player if he has to take on West Ham

Chris Wilder admits he would have no problem putting Jake Eastwood on the bench if Simon Moore is not fit enough to deputise for Dean Henderson when Sheffield United face West Ham tomorrow evening.

Eastwood was this week recalled from his loan spell at Scunthorpe United after Michael Verrips was taken off with a head injury during Sunday's FA Cup tie against AFC Fylde.

Concussion protocol rules him out of the West Ham game, while Moore has been struggling with a groin complaint. If he is not fit enough to take his place on the bench against David Moyes' Hammers, youngster Eastwood will deputise for Henderson.

"Michael will miss out because of the protocol, and we're all disappointed for him," Wilder said.

"His actions were very brave in terms of a stopping a goal and took a big bang. Simon's back on the grass so we have a decision between him and Jake.

"I'd have no problem putting Jake in if needed. Injuries and suspensions are part and parcel of the game and sometimes opportunities open up for people."

Eastwood is one of a number of young Blades gaining valuable experience in senior football. Fellow U23 players Rhys Norrington-Davies (Rochdale), Regan Slater (Scunthorpe) and Tyler Smith (Bristol Rovers) have all been placed with Football League clubs to accelerate their development.

"There's potential Jake could go back out on loan," Wilder added. "Michael will be back next week and it's done Jake the world of good to play at Scunthorpe, as it has with the rest of the young players.

"We could have a strong U23 squad here but the majority are out on loan, playing men's football. Jake has been doing that too; their progression and education is bigger than results at U23 level."
