Why the international break could come at the perfect time for Sheffield United and Chris Wilder

Sheffield United head into the international break in far better shape than last time, but has it come at the right moment for Chris Wilder's in-form side?

The international break will begin for Sheffield United following their trip to Charlton Athletic this weekend, but does it come at the right time for the Blades as they look to build on their growing momentum?

United have certainly improved their performances and results since returning from the last international break, which saw the side go 21 days without a match.

Despite a handful of players being called up for international duty, most of Chris Wilder’s squad used the time to reset - and the turnaround has been solid.

Prior to the last break, United had only won two out of their eight games, which left them just three points above the relegation zone in 18th place.

Since the return of Championship action, the Blades have looked like a different side in most parts.

They’ve gone from taking nine points in eight games to 13 from six, and they now sit level on points with eighth-place West Ham - who have the joint best goal difference in the league.

They have won back-to-back games for the first time this season, largely thanks to Sydie Peck and his hat-trick on Tuesday night at Preston, and have won three out of their last five.

Notably, their only defeat since the restart came against Portsmouth when they played over half the match a man down after Hamza Choudhry was controversially sent off - and even then they almost managed to scrape a point.

United are undoubtedly finding their form, but fatigue must be starting to kick in for Wilder’s men as they’ve played six Championship matches in just 24 days, averaging a game every four days.

This two-week-long interval comes at a good time for key players such as Kalvin Phillips and top goal-scorer Patrick Bamford to regain their fitness without the next fixture looming over them.

Before United players can unwind and reboot, they travel down to The Valley on Saturday as they face struggling Charlton Athletic, and a win could see them climb into the play-off spots, if results go their way.

All football fans, not just Unitedites, will be happy that this international break isn’t quite as long as the last, and United will be back in action against Watford on November 21.
