FIFA, football's governing body, is set to pave the way for the Premier League season to be completed with an indefinite extension of the 2019/20 campaign, according to reports today.

The Athletic report that FIFA's decision will be confirmed within 48 hours, which opens up the possibility of the current Premier League season reaching a conclusion after being hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

As part of their plans, FIFA will also alter the dates of the transfer window, planned for the summer, and also allow extensions to contracts of players which were due to expire on June 30.

Sheffield United would benefit from the move, as they are currently seventh in the Premier League table - with a game in hand on Manchester United in fifth.

Fifth is likely to be the final Champions League spot, after Manchester City's UEFA ban.

Dean Henderson's loan deal from Manchester United could be extended, if and when FIFA's plans are announced.
