But although the words of Norwich manager Daniel Farke may come as a surprise to some, considering the rivalry that has built up between the Blades and the Canaries in recent years, those close to the United manager Chris Wilder will not be shocked at all.

Wilder and Farke, despite their combative natures, are good friends - away from the touchline, at least - and Wilder sent the German a congratulatory text message when his Norwich side won promotion to the Premier League last season.

When United joined them in the top-flight a few weeks later, Wilder picked up his phone to a similar message of congratulations from Farke.

Football has been suspended in England since March because of coronavirus, while discussions are ongoing about a possible restart.

"I totally trust the key people and the Premier League who are making the decision," Farke said.

"It’s not an easy decision because there are disappointments for each and every scenario.

"When I think about Liverpool, for example, I think we’ve all got the feeling that for their great work, they deserve the chance to win the title.

"A team like Sheffield United, they deserve to fight for Europe after a great season and for us, we deserve to work on our little miracle to stay in this league, we would have had home games and in the FA Cup, we have a great chance.”
