Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has explained the reasoning behind leaving skipper Billy Sharp out of the matchday squad to face West Ham.

The Blades fell to a 1-0 defeat to David Moyes’ side at Bramall Lane, a result which kept United anchored to the bottom of the Premier League and without a win this campaign.

Wilder started with Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick up front while fellow forwards Rhian Brewster and Oliver Burke were named as substitutes.

There were aso places on the bench for to central defenders – Phil Jagielka and Jack Robinson – and two midfielder John Lundstram and Ben Osborn.

And Wilder has explained the reasoning behind having extra cover in those positions for the visit of West Ham, who secured the points thanks to a well struck, second half goal from Sebastien Haller.

“Rhian Brewster is the future of the club,” Wilder said. “But with John Egan getting a knock during the international break, we had to be mindful of the fact we had to cover that position and also Flecky (John Fleck) who was out there too.

"So we went with more defenders and midfielders than would otherwise be the case. It’s unfortunate for Billy and I can understand he’ll be disappointed but I’ve told him he arguably is even more important now as a skipper than when he’s playing.”

Wilder also revealed that striker Lys Mousset would be available to face West Brom in a crucial match at the Hawthorns on Saturday evening.
