What Sheffield United's Kean Bryan said about social media abuse after Man Utd man targeted with racism

Manchester United's Axel Tuanzebe became the latest player to receive racist abuse on social media, leading to a statement from the FA calling on the government and social media companies to clamp down.

During his time at Manchester City, Bryan was a member of the youth team which coach Patrick Vieira pulled off the pitch after City's Seko Fofana was allegedly racially abused by a HNK Rijeka player in Novigrad, Croatia.

"It's definitely going too far and it's been a problem for too long now," Bryan said.

"I'm a black person and I understand the difficulties players are going through, Axel got some abuse and it's not right.

"We go on social media to express how we are as people and give the best image of us, not to get abuse off fans.

"No-one can do anything about their skin colour and something needs to happen, whether it's the FA or government. I know they're speaking about punishments, but we're hearing that again and again and something needs to happen.

"I've never received racial abuse, but I understand why some people are thinking of coming off because enough is enough. It's not something we want to be associated with."

The FA's statement repeated its "enough is enough" mantra, adding: "We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real-life consequences."

David McGoldrick, Bryan's teammate at Bramall Lane and a key figure in the movement to take the knee before Premier League games, was sent a racist message after scoring against Chelsea last season.

"We're all different, in colour or religion or whatever and we need to be treated as one," Bryan added.

"Some of my friends have been racially abused. Luckily I've never experienced it but what's happened recently needs to stop, and the sooner that happens the better for everyone."
