United remain without a point from their opening four outings of the new campaign after being beaten 2-1 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium - David McGoldrick ending their long search for a goal during the closing stages after Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe had fired Mikel Arteta’s side in front.

United finished ninth in the table last term, having ended their 12 year absence from England’s top-flight competition by finishing second in the Championship. But the present campaign appears destined to become a battle for survival, with United breaking their transfer record to sign Rhian Brewster from Liverpool in an effort to bolster the firepower at Wilder’s disposal.

“There was a period in the game, just after their second, when we looked a little bit sorry for ourselves and I was critical of that but then,” Wilder said. “But afterwards, that wasn’t the case and they showed real character and desire to try and take something from it.”
