What Sheffield United really think about Dean Henderson's chances of finishing the season at Bramall Lane

Henderson has spent the past 23 months on loan with Chris Wilder’s side, thrusting himself into contention for a first England cap and helping them climb to seventh in the table after winning promotion from the Championship last term.

But with the fixture calendar suspended because of coronavirus, he could be summoned back to Manchester United in three weeks time; nine days before top-flight football hopes to return if ‘Project Restart’ is implemented.

Only two points behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fifth-placed squad and with a game in hand, United have high hopes of qualifying for Europe next term despite being written-off as the favourites for relegation at the beginning of the campaign. That has prompted speculation Old Trafford’s hierarchy could ignore new FIFA guidelines, which make provision for temporary agreements to be extended, and insist Henderson’s deal expires on May 30 as scheduled.

Although none of the three parties involved in the negotiations have commented on the matter publicly, it is understood United are hopeful the 23-year-old will receive permission to remain in South Yorkshire until the campaign is completed - should it go ahead as planned.

Despite coming under pressure to review Henderson’s situation, Solskjaer has made it plain he retains complete faith in David de Gea’s skills despite the Spaniard’s recent chequered form between the posts.

So, unless one of de Gea’s deputies are injured in training, refusing United’s request would be seen as an admission of weakness by Manchester United and prompt widespread criticism. That, combined with Henderson’s desire to stay put until his situation is reviewed later this summer, is likely to see Solskjaer grant Wilder’s request.

The United manager touched on the subject of Henderson’s future during a recent interview with a Middle Eastern broadcaster, saying: “Competing with Manchester United? Sheffield United? Are you sure?

“I personally think it would be morally correct to leave him playing for Sheffield United until the end of the season.”

“We all know, regarding the legality of loans, they might take that decision,” Wilder added. “But we’re not a threat to Manchester United, so I should imagine they’re happy with the players they’ve got to see them through the season.”

Henderson, who has kept 10 clean sheets in the competition this term, will be ineligible for selection when United travel to Old Trafford, which Solskjaer is also set to factor into his decision-making process.

Sinon Moore, a member of United’s 2017 League One title-winning squad, started when the two clubs drew 3-3 at Bramall Lane before Christmas, although Michael Verrips has since emerged as Henderson’s usual understudy.

Wilder has already approached Manchester United about the possibility of retaining Henderson’s services next season, should de Gea remain as Solskjaer’s first choice.
