What Sheffield United have told Liverpool as the battle for Rhian Brewster continues, while Balogun bid remains on the table

Sheffield United have identified the promise of regular first team football and similarities between their pressing style and the one which delivered the Premier League title to Anfield last term as reasons why Bramall Lane, not Aston Villa or Newcastle, is the most desirable destination for Rhian Brewster as Chris Wilder attempts to sign the Liverpool centre-forward on loan.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s visit to Villa Park, where officials have also expressed an interest in the England under-21 international, Wilder confirmed talks have taken place between United’s transfer negotiators and their counterparts in the North-West aimed at bringing Brewster to South Yorkshire.

Despite also submitting a bid for Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun, whose contract with the Londoners expires next summer, United remain determined to win the race for a player described as a “wonderful kid, big talent” by his manager Jurgen Klopp. But aware they lack the same spending power as other teams in the top-flight, and aware the German could contemplate selling Brewster providing the buying club agree to a buy-back clause, United have based their pitch on the fact the 20-year-old will become the focal point of their attack if he proves a success rather than used as an alternative option to the likes of Callum Wilson, who recently moved to St James’ Park, or Ollie Watkins - the most expensive player in Villa’s history following his £28m switch from Brentford.

As The Star revealed last weekend, United have also presented Klopp with a detailed plan outlining how they plan to further Brewster’s education, which emphasises the fact Wilder’s tactics mirror those Klopp has employed with great success since taking charge of Liverpool in 2015.

Brewster rose to prominence during a spell on loan with Swansea City last term, scoring 11 times in 22 appearances before returning to England.

Balogun has yet to make a senior appearance for Arsenal but is also highly sought after thanks to a prolific record at youth and development level. Brighton and Hove Albion are also tracking his situation at the Emirates Stadium, where it is reported he has told coaching staff he is unlikely to extend his current deal.
