Two goals in three minutes, from Bukayo Saka and substitute Nicolas Pepe, put Arsenal in control around the hour mark, before David McGoldrick curled home United's first Premier League goal this season to set up an interesting ending.

But defeat was United's fourth of the league season, in as many games, setting up an interesting showdown against bottom club Fulham after the international break.

"We had the right patience, we created the right moments in the game and when spaces started to open up, we scored two goals," Arteta said.

"The first time they went near our box, they scored.

"They [United] are resilient and clever in the way they manage and trap you in certain areas and to combat that is tricky. But we attacked more efficiently with more purpose and that's how we scored the goals."
