A number of players left at the expiry of their contracts, while a few loanees returned to their parent clubs and others were shipped out. But what happened to the main players that departed Bramall Lane this summer? Let’s take a look...
9. Kieron Freeman
One of the heroes of United's League One title-winning season, Freeman found first-team football hard to come by since George Baldock arrived at the Lane. Freeman is currently without a club, although he has been linked with a move to Stoke City. Photo: Alex Pantling
10. Panagiotis Retsos
A £15m signing for Bayer Leverkusen, the Greek international suffered a bad injury and a loan move to United was designed to get his career back on track. But a short cameo in an FA Cup tie at Reading was the only glimpse United supporters got, and his loan wasn't extended to cover the rest of United's season after Project Restart. He is reportedly close to signing for Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne. Photo: Simon Bellis
11. Ricky Holmes
After going 16 months without playing a game thanks to a back injury, Holmes revealed his plans to retire from football in the summer. Holmes developed the back issue when working on a building site before getting his break in football, and admitted in an interview that he wanted to retire on his own terms. Photo: Simon Bellis
12. Callum Robinson
Another who spent time away from the Lane on loan last season, Robinson eventually re-joined West Brom on a permanent basis in the summer, with Oli Burke coming the other way. He has scored three times for Albion so far this season, including a brace against Chelsea. Photo: Mark Scates - SNS Group
