United overcame an early penalty scare that was overruled by VAR but eventually gave away another which Declan Rice put away.

Issa Diop doubled the lead when it looked as though Chris Wilder’s side might be making headway after the break and then in the final minute Ryan Fredericks put a slightly flattering gloss on the scoreline with the third.

To add to United’s misery John Egan was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury.
