And one club linked with his services are United’s Championship rivals West Brom, who were also relegated from the Premier League last season and are still negotiating over bringing the Barnsley manager Valérien Ismaël to the Hawthorns to replace Sam Allardyce at the helm.

United are hardly short of options down the left-hand side of their defence, with Jack Robinson stepping in to deputise for O’Connell towards the back end of the season and Rhys Norrington-Davies – regarded by United’s previous coaching staff as O’Connell’s natural successor – returning from his loan spell at Stoke City.

West Brom and United are amongst the bookmakers’ favourites for promotion next season after last season’s relegation woe.
