And Warnock, now in charge of Championship club Middlesbrough, sent a video message to Root this morning.

"I'm really proud to be able to say to you, congratulations on your 100th Test," Warnock said.

"It's unbelievable, especially coming from Yorkshire and a Blade. I love watching you play, everyone writes you off and everyone on telly tells everyone where you're going wrong, and you don't give a damn.

"That's the best way son, you do your own thing. And you haven't done a bad job so far. You helped me out in the second Test in Sri Lanka, we got a bad refereeing decision and I couldn't sleep so I was up at four o'clock to watch the Test and what a good day's play.

"It cheered me right up. So congratulations again son, I hope there's another 100 to come and if you get chance, pop up to see us.

"You'll have a good day, on me. Well done, son."

Today's game sees Root's career go full-circle, after he made his Test debut in India back in December 2012. Born in Sheffield, he came through the ranks at Sheffield Collegiate CC and has been at Yorkshire since a young age. He became England Test captain in February 2017.
