The Irish central defender had been given the captain’s armband in the absense from the starting XI of Billy Sharp and Ollie Norwood.

Egan will now serve a one game ban, menaing that he misses the visit of Yorkshire rivals Leeds United on Sunday.

Many United fans were up in arms with the decision.
