Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough hailed ’a piece of individual brilliance’ from Jamie Murphy as the Scotsman grabbed an injury time winner for the Blades against Gillingham at Bramall Lane.
United dominated the majority of the match but were stunned when Luke Norris superbly fired the visitors into the lead, against the run of play, with just seven minutes remaining.
Clough’s men at that point had found Stephen Bywater’s goal difficult to breach and had struck the post twice.
However, substitute Michael Higdon equalised in the 87th minute for the Blades before Murphy’s solo effort deep into injury time secured a dramatic victory and ensured tonight’s 125th anniversary celebrations went off with a bang.
“It would have been a travesty if we hadn’t got something,” said Clough, “I think the fact the goals came late shouldn’t take away from the fact it was a very good performance.”
