Tributes paid as father of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson passes away

The 57-year-old went missing earlier that afternoon, having apparently gone for a swim near a dam located close to his property in Rincao do Inferno. Liverpool face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

A number of football teams, including Fluminense and Sao Paulo, paid tribute to Jose Becker via their social media accounts. Muriel Becker, Alisson’s older brother, plays for Fluminese.

“The Fluminense Football Club deeply regrets the death of Jose Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Muriel and Alisson,” a statement, published on Twitter, read.. “We wish all friends and family all the strength.”

Speaking earlier in his career, Alisson revealed his father had been a huge influence behind both his decision to become a footballer and his choice of position.

“My father played for his work team, my mother played handball in school and my grandfather played in amateur football,” he said. “And after this, came my brother playing and then I started to like it too.”

Internacional, who Alisson and Muriel have both represented, also posted a message offering their condolences.

Nicknamed The People’s Club, a statement said: “Clube do Povo wishes strength to family and friends in this moment of so much pain. It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker’s death, the father of our two ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel.”
