The goalkeeper, on loan from Manchester United, would command a figure of around £15m if he left Old Trafford at the end of the season, independent researchers studying form and price inflation report.

This figure, which compares to the £900,000 valuation Henderson commanded ahead of his debut for Chris Wilder’s side, is likely to rise if, as expected, he wins a first senior England cap ahead of June’s European Championships.

As The Star reported last month, United officials have already approached their counterparts in the North-West about renewing the 22-year-old’s agreement during the close season. Those discussions, however, are still at a preliminary stage with Wilder yet to receive any firm indication about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for the former under-21 international.

Henderson has kept 30 clean sheets in all competitions since joining United in the summer of 2018, with eight of those coming in the Premier League this term.

Only Burnley’s Nick Pope and Allison, of runaway leaders Liverpool, have returned the same number; prompting calls for Gareth Southgate to recognise the youngster when his squad stage friendlies against Italy and Denmark next month.

Jordan Pickford, Southgate’s current first choice, has completed six shut-outs so far this season.

Speaking after confirming negotiations with Solskjaer and his employers are already underway, Wilder acknowledged Manchester United are unlikely to sanction Henderson’s departure on a permanent basis after monitoring his progress in South Yorkshire.

But with the player insisting he does not want to become David de Gea’s understudy, United hope to use this - and Henderson’s soaring value - as leverage during those talks.

Previously of Carlisle, Henderson helped United win promotion to the top-flight last term, having reached the League One play-off final with Shrewsbury Town the season before.

He has yet to make a first team appearance for his parent club, despite enrolling on their academy programme in 2011.
