Steel showdown too close to call for divided bookies

With the two sides lying in second and third position in League One, not only is Sunday’s derby clash tough to call it’s also one of the most significant meetings between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United in recent years.

Bookies seem divided and one or two firms can’t split the sides at all. BetVictor meanwhile, believe the Owls are slight underdogs despite home advantage, pricing them at 9/5 and it’s the Blades that are outsiders at Ladbrokes, who rate Danny Wilson’s charges at 7/4.

As a result of this indecision, bet365’s 12/5 on a draw is bound to attract cash and as United are already five points ahead of their rivals with a couple of games in hand, that would be a better outcome for the visitors than it would be for Gary Megson’s troops.

The pair’s last meeting at Hillsborough finished 1-1 and punters look set to pile into a repeat at 6/1 with Coral. Similarly, Skybet’s 9/2 for both halves to finish all square might prove popular and as the Blades are in far better form than the hosts, they could enjoy support at 20/21 (Stan James) in the ‘Draw No Bet’ market, where William Hill quote the Owls at 10/11.

It’s hard not to feel that Wednesday have to halt their sequence of three straight league defeats and prevail if they are to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive. Boylesports mark 10/3 against Megson’s men securing the win they need by a solitary goal and a 2-1 triumph for the Owls is a 9/1 shot with Blue Square.

Betfred price the same scoreline in favour of United at 10/1 while an away success by a one goal margin is available at 10/3 with Paddy Power.

Doncaster remain bottom of the Championship after their late loss at Leeds but they have a decent chance to pick up their first maximum haul since early January as they entertain Peterborough. Rovers are slender favourites at 7/5 via Betfred and although BetVictor’s 5/2 for the spoils to be shared might lure some, Posh’s poor away record lends appeal to a home win.
