Wilder officially left United by mutual consent this evening, when the club released an official statement confirming the news and thanking their talismanic former manager for his service.

Under Wilder, United won two promotions in three years to go from League One to the Premier League, and finished ninth in their first top-flight season.

And McBurnie was amongst the first players to react to the news on social media.

"Today is a sad day for everyone at this great football club," he wrote. "Thank you for everything you did for me and my family gaffer, I will never forget it.

"We truly shared some fantastic times on and off the pitch together. Sorry we let you down in the end."

John Egan later shared a picture of him celebrating promotion with Wilder, captioned: “Thank you for everything. Time of our lives.”
