Victory for the Blades would have moved Chris Wilder’s side to within a point of Tottenham Hotspur – who occupy sixth place, which as it stands is one of only two spots guaranteed to secure a berth in next season’s Europa League.

But the home side suffered their second successive defeat courtesy of a 46th minute header from the Toffees’ Brazilian star, Richarlison.

It means that unless Wolves lose in the later kick-off to Crystal Palace at Molineux, United's hopes of qualifying for Europe are all but over.

Here’s what Blades fans have been saying on Twitter about their side’s disappointing defeat to the Merseysiders.

@Drury94 Probably one game too many, regardless of position at end of the season we've been incredible all season really. A couple of smart signings and we can absolutely compete again in top half next season #sufc #twitterblades

@middo_7 As much as I would have loved Europe, looks like I’ll be treating her to that new kitchen instead. #utb #sufc #twitterblades

@KieranBatham None of our strikers are good enough Sharp two year deal? Really? Lunny and Osborn not good enough based on form since restart, neither is Stevens #sufc #twitterblades

@Algarvegit We were bad against Newcastle and Leicester but tonight has to be the most disappointing performance of the season. Everton have a defence full of Poundshop Kurt Zoumas and we haven't had a sniff all night. #twitterblades #sufc

@CurtisJ15 Would love to clap these boys off at Southampton on Sunday. Anyone that's got anything negative to say about this team hasn't followed us close enough for the last 30 years #sufc #twitterblades

@mike_g_sheff Really disappointing performance @SheffieldUnited. Amazing season and so much hope but just didn’t really have the energy to keep it up #sufc #twitterblades #SHUEVE

@_joshchapman98 We really need to start testing the opposition keeper more. We put together some lovely build up in good areas, only to let ourselves down by a poor final ball, or not having a shot at goal and trying to walk it in. If you don’t shoot, you don’t score. #sufc #twitterblades

@TuftyBall Positives from that game - Basham was superb, our MOTM. Baldock played well too. We don't look THAT bad at the back - I'm more concerned about us going forward. Need to invest in the transfer window and bag ourselves a 15/20 goal a season striker. #SUFC #TwitterBlades

@daaannnnnnnnnn1 What an unbelievable season we’ve had. The lads have run through brick wall after brick wall for the gaffer and it’s starting to show. Roll on next season. YOU FILL UP MY SENSES. #sufc #twitterblades #sheffieldunited #demblades

@azzle94 Only Bash comes out of that with any credit. Wilder isn’t immune from blame - For me, should've changed the team after the dreadful performance at Leicester. They’ve let him down again and he isn’t going to be pleased. #SUFC #twitterblades

@JoeBladesman11 Great season @SheffieldUnited. Very proud of the lads this year. Get Saints out the way and get ready to go again. Thanks for the memories. Cheers Bladesman #sufc #twitterblades

@tyronej1984 So frustrating to see our season fizzle out like this, but an absolutely unbelievable effort to finish where we’re going to. #twitterblades #SUFC
