An announcement over the manager’s future could even be made today, ahead of Sunday’s trip to Leicester City.

Wilder led his boyhood club from League One into the Premier League with two promotions in the space of three seasons. But there have been mounting tensions behind the scenes for some time now, over a series of issues.

Blades fans reacted understandably to the news this morning.

Olivia Rhodes said: “Devastated. Don't even have words. Didn't ever want us to become this kind of club. Both Sheffield clubs being run into the ground by owners who haven't got a clue. What a sad time for the 'home of football'.”

Jake Bellamy said: “Sickened. Manager and now fans let down by so many. They’ve made this decision now so our voices cannot be heard in the ground. Genuinely horrific business and no wonder the owners struggle for money. Chris is one of our own and this will not be accepted by a single Blade.”

Chris Shore added: “Another Sunderland coming. Wilder was the man.”

Jordan Capstick said: “Be back in league one in no time. Shambles”, while Mark Pitts added: “Back to what we do best. Shooting ourselves in the foot. Good luck Tufty you deserve a top, top job.”

Here are a selection of Blades fans’ tweets this morning as they digest the news coming out of Bramall Lane…

@MJonathanLee: As a life long Blade if you asked me who I would wish to take over from Chris Wilder and take us back up there is one simple answer. Chris Wilder.

@justacword: Let's think back to 2016 and the state the club was in. Chris Wilder is the best man for the job. There is nobody even close. To lose him is a bigger disaster than relegation.

@Trev_Allison: Wilder will go down as a club legend, absolutely gutted he's leaving!

But we're Blades, and the club will be there long after Wilder and the Prince have gone! I'll be right there behind whoever is there when the fans are allowed back in the stadium

@rossbateman1: Gutted about Wilder going, his recruitment has cost him and possibly his recent press conferences. Can't see who comes in that's any better for next season
