Sheffield United's Ravel Morrison admits he wants to "go further in game" after Wayne Rooney praise; describes Manchester United regrets

Sheffield United's Ravel Morrison has responded to Wayne Rooney's comments about his natural ability, by insisting he still hopes to "go further" in the game.

As The Star reported yesterday, England legend Wayne Rooney described Morrison as better than Paul Pogba “by a country mile” -but believes the midfielder’s failure to realise his potential is a lesson for every young footballer.

Morrison joined United in the summer after their promotion to the Premier League but made only one appearance in the top-flight before joining Middlesbrough on loan in January.

His initial one-year deal is up at the end of June and although United have an option to extend it, it is understood that they are unlikely to do so.

"He (Morrison) struggled with his lifestyle and his environment which was sad for him," Rooney wrote in his newspaper column, "because I saw Paul Pogba come through, Jesse Lingard - all these players - and Ravel was better than any of them by a country mile.

“He nutmegged Nemanja Vidic three times in the space of a minute in one training game. He is proof that you can’t escape the fact there are guidelines every player has to obey in professional football."

Morrison described Rooney's comments as "amazing, especially from the player he is."

"He’s probably one of the best ever to come out of England, if not THE best," Morrison added.

“But it makes you a bit upset as well because I could have gone a bit further, I should have gone a bit further and I’m still hoping to go further.

"But the likes of Pogba and Jesse are great players.

"I knew I had ability and going into Manchester United was a nice environment to go into every day, world-class players, just enjoyable. If I could go back through my life again there would be a lot of things I'd change.

"I grew up at United, I was there from the Under-9s. I'd skip training some days, and I would wake up and don't know why I'd done it, but I'd skip it. And it's hard to get me off the training field now."
