Sheffield United's George Baldock is set for Greece

As this newspaper first revealed towards the end of last season, the Sheffield United wing-back qualifies for the former European champions by virtue of his ancestry.

Having impressed at Premier League level since helping United win promotion last term, Baldock’s performances appear destined to see him win a first international call-up following talks with officials in Athens.

Baldock told The Star: “I think there could be a possibility. I don’t want to say too much because it’s not there yet and there’s a long way to go. There’s a lot of paperwork to go through.

“If it happens, it happens and brilliant.

“Until then, all my focus is on Sheffield United. But yes, there’s been talks.”

If Baldock is summoned by Schip, he could find himself playing alongside his new United team mate Panos Retsos, who arrived at Bramall Lane on loan from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year.

Aged 26, Baldock is expected to make his 29th appearance of the campaign when Norwich City visit South Yorkshire tomorrow. A win could see United, who earlier this week reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, climb to fifth in the table - only two points behind the Champions League places - with 10 matches of their campaign remaining.

Greece, who failed to qualify for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, are also scheduled to face Holland before entering the UEFA Nations League - where they face Moldova, Kosovo and Slovenia - in September.

“My grandmother on my dad’s side was Greek,” Baldock said. “So I’m a quarter Greek, it is legit.

“I’m not too sure how quickly they’d be looking to have me play, that’s not a lie, I’m being honest. I just know there’s a lot of paperwork involved because of all the passport situations and that.

“If it happens, and they do want me, there’s the potential there to do it and it would be a great honour. But until it happens, I really can’t say too much more.”
