Sheffield United's FA Cup conundrums ahead of Plymouth test - and what they'll tell us about Manchester United trip

Their fourth-round tie at home to Plymouth Argyle represents a rare opportunity for the Blades to begin a game as favourites, taking into account their results in the league this season.

And victory over the League One side would set up another home clash in the next round, against Championship opposition in either Millwall or Bristol City.

So all eyes will be on manager Chris Wilder's team selection this weekend.

One conundrum is whether to stick with Aaron Ramsdale in goal, or give a rare appearance to one of his understudies.

As discussed in this column, Ramsdale's confidence looks shot at the minute. He is a good goalkeeper playing in a team low in belief, and isn't being protected well enough by the players in front of him.

George Baldock's return to fitness could see him restored to wing-back, and it'll be interesting to see who plays in the middle of defence.

John Egan is suspended for the clash with Manchester United - the third time he's missed a game against them in four since United were promoted - so does Wilder play him against Plymouth, or give the makeshift back three that will line up at Old Trafford a chance to gel?

Phil Jagielka could come in at centre-half, but he had a torrid time against the Red Devils at Bramall Lane after coming off the bench and was substituted again himself later on. Ethan Ampadu is another option, but he has played at left-centre half in recent weeks.

If he is shifted across, that could mean Jack Robinson (if fit), Kean Bryan or Enda Stevens deputising there. All three have barely played in recent weeks. Who'd be a manager, eh?

Plenty for Wilder to think about, then, as United approach two very different challenges in their next two games.

Managers often view cup games as a distraction, especially those in charge of teams either battling for promotion or trying to stave off relegation, but there is no such thing as a 'free hit' for this manager when he sends out a team wearing the badge of Sheffield United.
