The chances of Sheffield United playing in Europe increased on Sunday after Manchester City won the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

Winners of the competition automatically earn a place in the Europa League, but given the likelihood City will be in the Champions League – pending appeal following the handing down of a ban by Uefa - then that extra place goes into the Premier League.

Fifth place also gets a spot, so City’s goes down to sixth.

United are currently eighth in the Premier League table, two points behind fifth-placed Wolves who beat Tottenham 3-2 on Sunday.

However, crucially United have played a game less as they were due to take on Carabao Cup finalists Aston Villa.

Of course, the Blades could still qualify by winning the FA Cup, with the fifth round tie with Reading coming up on Tuesday night.

Aside from that, though, six of the top eight teams remain in the FA Cup, increasing the chances of a team who have already qualified for Europe winning the competition.

Again, like in the Carabao Cup, that particular spot goes to the highest placed Premier League team who haven’t yet qualified.

That potential Uefa ban for City, should it go through, would mean fifth place going to the Champions League and the Europa League spots starting at sixth.
