It’s been a period of only three promotions to the Premier League but containing plenty of near-misses, drama and a huge turnover of players - some who made their mark and others who, well, simply disappeared without trace. There have been impressive loanees, big-money signings and also bargain frees who have played their part in shaping this club’s recent history.
But who would make a list of the 25 best players to have played for the Blades in the last quarter-of-a-century? It’s an impossible task - but we made our man do it anyway, compiling his thoughts for you to agree with or ridicule. Presented in no particular order, here are our best Blades from the last 25 years...
5. Dean Henderson
What is it with United goalkeepers and character? A two-season loanee but what a two seasons they were. A promotion in one and an amazing European tilt, and ninth-placed Premier League finish, in the other. Few loanees have made such an impact and he will always be welcomed back at BDTBL. Talking of value for money… David McGoldrick on a free? What a player. Seemingly on the scrapheap after leaving Ipswich but came to United on ‘trial’, scored in his first game against Inter and didn’t look back. A real fans’ favourite – not many get a cheer after missing an open goal - who loved his time at Bramall Lane
7. George Baldock
Hot on Norwood’s heels for the title of United’s record Premier League appearance holder and another favourite amongst supporters. His front-footed, aggressive – some say Furious George – approach suits this football club so well and hopefully we see much more of him Photo: Simon Bellis
8. Jack O’Connell
Magic. What else can be said? Defensively imperious, offensively threatening. A defensive rock with the turn of pace and dexterity of a winger in one devastating Scouse combination. His injury, with a top Prem move and England caps surely in the pipeline, was one of the real tragedies of football but he will never be forgotten at Bramall Lane
