The Sheffield United player was among four goalkeepers called-up for a training camp at St George’s Park in Staffordshire, after impressing Southgate and his coaching staff with his performances during the second-half of the season.

But with Burnley’s Nick Pope making quicker progress than expected in his recovery from injury, both Ransdale and West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone have been allowed to return home.

However, the two men were both told they will remain on the Three Lions’ radar after Southgate informed them of his decision personally.

Capped 15 times by his country at under-21 level, Ramsdale rejoined United in an £18.5m deal from AFC Bournemouth at the beginning of the season. Although his second spell with the club where he started his professional career began in difficult circumstances, Ramsdale grew in stature as the campaign progressed and was ultimately named as United’s player of the year.

Although his performances were not enough to save them from relegation, officials at Bramall Lane now believe the youngster is worth more than double the sum they paid to lure him back to South Yorkshire.

However, Ramsdale has made it plan he has no intention of seeking a move away and is expecting to start life as new manager Slavisa Jokanovic’s undisputed number one when the Serb officially takes charge early next month.

The England boss revealed Ramsdale, Ben White and Ben Godfrey were aware they were called up to be part of the squad for the two pre-tournament friendlies.

“You never want to give bad news,” he said of informing those who had not made the cut.

“It is lovely to give people debuts and bring people into the squad for the first time but it is much harder to deliver bad news.

“This time, there were three boys who new they were coming in for the experience of training with us and for these two matches and who knows what might happen and they have trained really well.”
